Barred Goose
The Barred Goose is a beautiful and distinctive looking bird, named for the two black bars that appear horizontally on its head. Males and females are identical looking, and they are primarily vegetarian. They nest in large colonies and favor low lying swamps. Native to Asia, they are found over much of the continent, where they migrate from India through the Himalayan Mountains on their way to nesting grounds in Tibet.
Barred Geese are capable of flying to elevations of over 20,000 feet facing winds of more than 200 mph, where exposed flesh would freeze instantly. Able to fly more than 1,000 miles in a single day, they are super powered by a very special type of hemoglobin enzyme in their blood that allows them to absorb oxygen quicker than other birds and achieve feats of extreme endurance. Their amazing capability has fascinated scientists for decades and many tests and studies have been conducted in order to better understand the remarkable constitution of the Bar Headed Goose.
It is without doubt an incredible bird!
