The Wolf is the largest member of the Canidae family, which also includes foxes, jackals,  coyotes and domestic dogs. More than 30 subspecies of Wolf exist, and they can be found all through North America and Eurasia.

Humans have lived with wolves for many thousands of years, both in fear and in fascination of this beautiful creature. They are pervasive In mythology and folklore and have suffered greatly thanks to the misunderstanding and cruelty of the human race.

Wolves once populated large portions of the world, but due to their perceived threat to humans and livestock , were hunted to near extinction in the 19th and 20th centuries. By 1950, in the U.S., wolves only remained in northern Minnesota. Fortunately, conservation and protection laws have been enacted in the last few decades which have allowed  wolf populations to recover to a large extent. And wolves are an essential component to a healthy ecosystem- by regulating prey populations, wolves enable many other species of plants and animals to sustain a natural level of biodiversity.
