The Pig is one of the most common and well known animals in the world. it’s population is estimated to be roughly one billion - and given its popularity as a food source, pigs are constantly being bred for human consumption.

Besides the small - scale family farm, which is a rarity these days, industrial Pig farming is an enormous business. Enabled by drugs that allow the animals to be confined and bred strictly for their meat and skin, this large scale corporate agriculture has created a host of dire consequences for the animals, the humans that consume them, and the environment that is forced to suffer the brunt of their waste production.

I’d like to be able to paint a rosier picture of the life of a Pig , but this animal has been almost entirely bred as a tool for human sustenance. In addition it’s meat, it’s bristles are still used for paintbrushes and it’s genetic makeup, which is similar to humans, makes it a common test subject in medical research. Just last week it was reported that surgeons in NY had successfully attached a kidney grown in a genetically altered pig to a human patient and found that the organ worked normally.
With that in mind, who knows what lies ahead for the Pig… And for Mankind….
